Preserve the beauty of copper - how to care for copper washbasins and sinks?

Copper sinks are definitely a beautiful and original solution for a bathroom or kitchen. They add character and style to any space, and additionally have natural properties that kill a wide range of pathogenic microorganisms. However, like any material, they require proper care to maintain their unique appearance.

Certain chemicals should be avoided when cleaning copper as they can damage the surface of the copper and ruin its appearance. Here are the most important chemicals to avoid:

  1. Acidic cleaners
For example, hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, vinegar and citrates. Acidic cleaners can dissolve the copper surface and damage its structure.
  2. Alkaline agents
For example, ammonia, caustic soda, sodium and potassium hydroxide. These agents can also damage the copper surface, especially if left on for long periods of time.
  3. Abrasive agents
For example, baking powder, toothpaste, stainless steel sponges and grinding wheels for metal. These agents can scratch the surface of the copper and damage its appearance.
  4. Chlorine-containing agents
For example, fabric bleach and disinfectants. Chlorine can corrode the copper surface, leading to a loss of luster and staining.

It is safest to use special cleaning agents intended for copper, which do not damage its surface and help to maintain its original, original appearance.

Another important point in the care of copper washbasins is the regular cleaning of their impurities, such as soap residue, scale or water deposits. These impurities can affect the appearance of the copper over time. To prevent this, rinse the sink with clean water after each use and then wipe it with a dry cloth.

Another important element in the care of copper sinks is to avoid the use of hard tools, brushes or wire scourers. It is worth remembering to use a soft cloth or sponge for cleaning, because copper is a soft metal and its surface is relatively easy to mechanically damage.

It is worth thinking about impregnation in advance. There are special waxes and pastes for impregnating copper sinks and other copper surfaces, which help to preserve their natural color and shine, and protect them from harmful external factors.
Copper waxes and polishes should be made with natural ingredients such as beeswax, lanolin or coconut oil to avoid damage to the surface. When choosing a wax or polish, pay attention to whether it is a product intended for copper, as there are also waxes and polishes for other surfaces that are not suitable for copper.
Before applying the wax or polish, the surface should be thoroughly cleaned of dust and dirt and any contaminants such as fingerprints should be removed with appropriate copper cleaners. Then apply a thin layer of wax or paste and polish the surface with a soft cloth. Copper has a natural tendency to oxidize, which means it can start to darken and become stained over time. Wax or copper paste helps to delay this process and keep copper surfaces looking beautiful for longer.

The natural patina on copper is self-healing, which means that over time, surface damage and dullness disappear and the patina regenerates itself. However, in the case of artificially applied green patina, which is not the result of the natural process of copper oxidation, surface regeneration is not possible. If the patina is damaged, e.g. by scratching or abrasion, the green color will not return. The washbasin will retain all functional properties, but its visual qualities will be irretrievably changed. Therefore, in the case of copper sinks and washbasins with a green patina, special care should be taken and avoid factors that may damage their surface.

To sum up, copper sinks are a great solution for people who value the original style and natural properties offered by this unique metal. However, you should remember about proper care to keep their appearance for a long time.
