Types and uses of tiles

Tiles can be used for finishing floors and walls in all rooms of our house or flat. Additionally, they can be used as a decorative element or laid on terrace surfaces - provided that they have the appropriate technical parameters. Regardless of the chosen location, it is worth considering carefully before purchase whether they will be exposed to moisture, mechanical or thermal influences.

Types of tiles

In our shop, you can find many models of tiles in 2 categories - wall tiles (Mexican, Moroccan, Iznik, Tunisian, Zellige) and floor tiles (cement tiles available from stock, cement tiles on request, floor mosaics, plattas, terracotta). The choice is really big - we can choose from many possibilities, whether it is a matter of material, pattern, colour or place of origin.

Cement tiles versus ceramic tiles

Cement tiles, also known as hydraulic or encaustic tiles, have been used for almost two centuries as a luxurious finish for floors and walls both indoors and outdoors. Tiles can be laid on floors, walls, terraces, balconies, tables, in working areas of walls in the kitchen and can also be used individually as decorative elements. Cement tiles need to be impregnated in order to retain their functional characteristics. The top layer of a cement tile consists of powdered marble, river stones and mineral pigments cemented together into a homogeneous mass. Thanks to an old technique of combining these raw materials in a hydraulic press, cement tiles have a perfectly smooth, velvety to the touch, matt surface, impossible to obtain with ceramics, including gres tiles.

Ceramic tiles are often chosen to finish various surfaces, not only because they are available in many fashionable designs, but above all because they are practical, due to their water resistance, durability and easy cleaning. However, due to the manufacturing process, there are certain characteristics that must be kept in mind, e.g. the artisanal production of some tiles means that the glaze may show small cracks during firing (ckrackle effect) and the patterns may slightly differ from each other. The tiles are resistant to abrasion and even with deeper scratches the pattern is still visible, as the individual colours are contained within the glaze. Each tile is first coated with a primer - a base colour - and then each pattern colour is applied separately. After the firing process the tiles obtain their final colour, as well as their extraordinary resistance.

Application

Depending on the chosen tile model, we can allow ourselves unlimited possibilities of our imagination! Starting with the classics - finishing floors, walls, terraces - moving on to filling the space under the stairs, or in the hall as a practical element under clothes hangers (in the interest of cleanliness of walls). Tiles are also used in a variety of decorative elements - as the filling of the top surface of a table, a cupboard or a practical stand for our favourite mug.
